What are the benefits of hiring someone with a past conviction?

Business People Handshake Greeting Deal at work.

I am sure that you have heard of the fact that employment is the number one way to reduce reoffending, which we all know will impact society in an immeasurably positive way, not only saving the government money, reducing pressure on police, reducing the number of victims of crime but also the impact on children of offenders…the list goes on and on.

But as an employer you are probably going to be concerned with things closer to home.

How is it going to tangibly benefit my business to hire someone with a conviction?
What improvements will I see?

Firstly Skills Shortages – many employers are struggling to recruit and are experiencing skill shortages – around 11 million people of working age in the UK have a criminal record, so by opening your recruitment to this huge group of people, you are much more likely to fill that gap. Also, prisons provide some excellent access to vocational, technical and academic training – meaning that potentially that qualification you have been looking for on an application could be sat across a number of CVs all of which were developed in the Careers Centre of a prison.

Life Experience – Resilience, Determination, Motivation…these are all skills that are regularly looked for by employers and these are skills that anyone who has been through the criminal justice system and come out eager to find work has in spades. The situations that these people have potentially been through may shock you, but one thing I have learnt when speaking to people with lived experience is that I am always impressed that they survived and that they have come out still determined to make something of their life. If you want an employee that won’t give up at the first hurdle…. then look no further than a person with a past conviction.

Recruitment Costs – this is a huge issue for a number of employers, often spending £1000s per annum of recruitment agencies, to then still have massive levels of turnover – whereas when you partner with a charity that supports ex-offenders you will have the benefit of having the candidate vetted, risk assessed and prepped for the role, a contact who is available to mentor the candidate should any early concerns arise and also the tax benefits of donating to a charity rather than paying a recruitment agency!

Staff Retention – 81% of employers that hire ex-offenders say that it has improved their levels of staff retention. Marks and Spencer recently commented that they felt, the higher value that people with a past conviction placed on employment, plus the desire to stay out of prison created a much higher level of loyalty to the business.
